CVE-2023-38831

Exploited in the wild. In CISA KEV since 2023‑08‑24. A vendor fix is available.

Published Updated Sources: CVE.org, NVD, BDU

What to do

The vendor has published a fix. Version details are below where the sources state them.

Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Update WinRAR to version 6.23 or newer on all Windows machines that have it installed.
  2. If you can’t update right away, stop using WinRAR to open ZIPs from untrusted sources and ask your IT person for a temporary workaround (but updating is the real fix).
  3. Check whether any recent suspicious ZIPs were opened with WinRAR, especially around the period before the update.

What it is

From the CVE record

RARLAB WinRAR before 6.23 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code when a user attempts to view a benign file within a ZIP archive. The issue occurs because a ZIP archive may include a benign file (such as an ordinary .JPG file) and also a folder that has the same name as the benign file, and the contents of the folder (which may include executable content) are processed during an attempt to access only the benign file. This was exploited in the wild in April through October 2023.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

CVE-2023-38831 is a serious WinRAR security flaw that lets attackers run malicious code when someone simply tries to view an image inside a ZIP file; if you use WinRAR on Windows, you should act urgently and update right away.
