Exploited in the wild. In CISA KEV since 2023‑08‑24. A vendor fix is available.

Published Updated Sources: CVE.org, NVD, GitHub, BDU

What to do

The vendor has published a fix. Version details are below where the sources state them.

Steps

Written by AI from the record
  1. Check your Openfire version; this applies to Openfire 3.10.0 through 4.7.4 and 4.6.7 (vulnerable range).
  2. If you run a vulnerable version, upgrade to Openfire 4.6.8 or 4.7.5 (4.6.8 is the fixed version on the 4.6 line, and 4.7.5 is the fixed version on the 4.7 line).
  3. Confirm the Openfire admin console/setup environment is not exposed to the internet; restrict access to trusted IPs or internal networks if possible.
  4. If you cannot upgrade immediately, apply the mitigations/workarounds from the vendor’s advisory (GHSA-gw42-f939-fhvm) and schedule the upgrade as soon as feasible.

What it is

From the CVE record

Openfire is an XMPP server licensed under the Open Source Apache License. Openfire's administrative console, a web-based application, was found to be vulnerable to a path traversal attack via the setup environment. This permitted an unauthenticated user to use the unauthenticated Openfire Setup Environment in an already configured Openfire environment to access restricted pages in the Openfire Admin Console reserved for administrative users. This vulnerability affects all versions of Openfire that have been released since April 2015, starting with version 3.10.0. The problem has been patched in Openfire release 4.7.5 and 4.6.8, and further improvements will be included in the yet-to-be released first version on the 4.8 branch (which is expected to be version 4.8.0). Users are advised to upgrade. If an Openfire upgrade isn’t available for a specific release, or isn’t quickly actionable, users may see the linked github advisory (GHSA-gw42-f939-fhvm) for mitigation advice.

In plain language

Written by AI from the record

CVE-2023-32315 lets anyone on the network (no login needed) bypass Openfire’s admin login and view restricted admin pages if you’re running Openfire 3.10.0 through 4.7.4 or 4.6.7—this is serious for any Openfire server exposed to the internet.

Unauthenticated authentication bypass in the Openfire administration console via a path traversal weakness in the setup environment; attackers can reach restricted admin console pages without valid credentials. This has been listed in CISA KEV and is confirmed exploited in the wild.

If you're affected
